Description
Vintage, hand-carved, custom made, wood, gold gilded picture frame appropriate for an 8 1/4 x 10 1/4 inch American Impressionist oil painting. If you look online at Lot 1120, Winter 2011 sale at Morphy Auctions, you’ll see that this frame is at least in the style of frame-maker Philip N. Yates.
Yates was a Philadelphia / New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania frame maker who made frames for the PA Impressionist, Philadelphia Ten, etc., artists. Frederick Harer and Ben Badura were earlier makers, I think, and then Frederick Coll and Philip Yates continued the tradition.
Philip Yates was born circa 1885. Yates was originally from Australia. He was in his early to mid 50’s in 1940. I think he made frames from ca. 1930-1960.
This frame was estate-picked here in the Philly area by one of the estate buyers I know. It was obvious that it was custom-made for a matted watercolor, a nice antique painting but not something we could identify as to artist.
The back was sealed / papered and I left the paper on the back of the frame. Without the wood ever being exposed, there’s not much patina to see. The frame doesn’t seem ca. 1930, but it’s old and in that style, maybe more like from 1950. It’s in exceptional condition.
If you have a 8 x 10 inch oil on canvas on stretcher bars with keys that was keyed-out a bit, this frame should fit that painting. It would have to measure approx. 8 1/4 x 10 1/4”. I understand that it looks like it’ll work for an exact 8 x 10, but please trust me, it will not. It’s at least 1/16” too big in the 8-direction.
So, If your painting is just 8 x 10 inches or a tiny bit less, this frame will be a hair off, and it’ll need a thin liner or flat liner to make it work for your painting. The frame is 1 1/2 inches wide. It won’t overwhelm or underwhelm, just impress with the quality. I think a little George Sotter, John Folinsbee or Harry Leith-Ross painting would look great in it.
Hand carved wooden picture frame.
The back of frame is papered, so if it’s marked we can’t see the markings.
All original with red bole, gilding, and rotten stone or other dark substance applied for toning.
Rabbet size aka inside lip of the frame measurements from the back: approx. 8 5/8 x 10 1/2 inches. The opening measures, from the front or face, approx. 7 7/8 x 9 3/4 inches. It’s a 1 1/2 inch wide frame. The overall size of it is approx. 11 x 12 7/8 inches.
Excellent condition, with some intentional or unintentional distressing.
