    Description

    About this Item:
An exceptional circa 1880 gold gilded frame.   This is a top-end, 'High-Style' Victorian frame with absolutely exquisite gesso molding.  It also features details picked out with hand-applied ebonizing.  The frame is rare in that the artwork is 'projected' out toward the viewer with the frame curving away from the artwork and toward the wall (see next to last photo).  I've sold antique Victorian frames for over 30 years and this is the single most striking example of high-end design I've ever seen.  I displayed it proudly in my home for the past 3 decades and I'm only selling now because we are downsizing into a much smaller residence.
The gilding is original and in exceptional condition with only minor scuffs and scratches (see photos). The gesso is complete and has no missing areas and only minor bumping on the corners. The 'wavy' glass is original.  Original square cut nails.  Original pine back-board. The eye-hooks and wire on the back of the frame are modern.
The print is a steel engraving of an oil painting named "A Playful Moment" by Gustave De Jonghe.  It features a beautiful young woman in an opulent room with Japanese decor who has been distracted by her cat which is playfully playing with the folds of her skirt.
    Although De Jonghe
started his career painting historical and sacred subject matter, he is most famous for his genre paintings with bourgeois themes and rich materials, such as "A Playful Moment".
By the 1850s De Jonghe was quite popular and recognized
the direct successor of the renowned Belgian painter,
    Alfred Stevens
    .
He exhibited at the Royal Academy
in 1875.  His works were incredibly popular with the rich and elite in both Europe and America.
The steel print was made by Charles Alva Walker.  Walker was a self-taught but versatile artist who used oils, etching, wood and steel engraving and monotype as media for expression. While engaged in scientific research work at the Peabody Academy of Science at Salem, he developed a talent for both wood and steel engraving. He was an award winning member of the Boston Art Club, the London Print Sellers Association, and the Copley Society. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1884 to 1892, as well as at the Boston Art Club.
The print is original to the frame.  It dates from the 1880s.
This dramatic frame measures approx. 21" x 19".  The rabbit behind the glass is 16" x 9 1/2" (the size of the print).  The frame projects 2" from the wall.
